Animal Care Guidelines for the Retail Pet Industry©
These are
standards all pet stores should observe in dealing with pet animals.
Many of these are already standard operating procedures for various pet
stores, to one degree or another. But until now there was never a
single source to look to for pet stores across the country. As
regulators in many jurisdictions seek to impose new mandates, and
Congress considers legislation to bring most pet stores under federal
licensure (and subject to USDA regulatory requirements), a national
standard emanating from the industry itself will enable pet stores to
stay ahead of the curve.
The Guidelines
will assist retailers in implementing best practices for care of
animals as well as supplementing or complementing existing federal,
state and local laws and regulations. Retailers may rely on the
Guidelines in building on their current practices and operating
materials. The recommendations provide for the health and welfare of
pet animals as well as the health and safety of the broader public.
Adhering to appropriate standards will help minimize risks of disease
