At the same time, issues that have been around for many years persist or resurface, demanding industry answers. Because pets generate strong emotions, those in the pet trade are often called upon to defend the practice of selling companion animals to the public. The many issues implicit in the sale of live animals often require a recognized industry position. PIJAC prepares and adopts position papers to address some o the more common questions, making these available to persons in the media or government as necessary. PIJAC Policy Positions include: Testimony PIJAC routinely drafts testimony for committee hearings on federal and state legislation impacting the pet trade. Such testimony may be delivered by PIJAC staff or members who serve as liaisons in the various states. Utilizing experts in the field and drawing upon PIJAC's extensive library of current relevant texts, historical legislative files and pertinent legal resources, PIJAC prepares responses to proposed legislation that fairly reflect the interests and positions of the members of the association, while accommodating political realities. Often, depending upon the available time frame, we will solicit opinions of our members in crafting PIJAC's message. When alerting members to legislative initiatives calling for a response, PIJAC generally provides "talking points" which may be individualized for purposes of testimony. Members will also occasionally ask PIJAC to assist in preparation of individual testimony. Please see below for testimony PIJAC has submitted on behalf of the pet industry.
