The Pet Industry Joint Advisory Council (PIJAC) is urging California Governor Jerry Brown to veto Assembly Bill 485. AB 485 is a statewide ban on the sale of non-rescue, non-shelter dogs, cats, and rabbits from pet stores that passed the state Senate on Tuesday and was approved by the Assembly today.

A landmark initiative to help assure proper care of small companion animals was unveiled today by the Pet Industry Joint Advisory Council (PIJAC) and leaders from across the pet community. The PIJAC Small Animal Standards of Care (SAC) is the first-ever, comprehensive set of voluntary standards for breeders and distributors of small mammals, reptiles, and birds.

Today, stakeholders met to discuss the future of Assembly Bill 485. Regretfully, the bill’s proponents did not change their position, meaning that those who care for and about companion animals will continue to oppose AB 485 on behalf of California’s pets, pet lovers, and providers of pet care.

Four New Jersey pet care professionals and a national leader in animal advocacy today called on state Senators to support Governor Chris Christie’s conditional veto of Senate Bill 3041. The bill, which would undermine New Jersey’s Pet Purchase Protection Act, is before the Senate tomorrow for a veto override vote.
